Preconception counselling service

Preconception counselling supports individuals who are planning a future pregnancy to prepare their health in advance. A healthy pregnancy starts before conception, and early conversations can help reduce the risk of complications for both parent and baby.

This discussion is ideally held three to six months before trying to conceive, and should form part of ongoing care for anyone with reproductive potential who may wish to become pregnant now or in the future.

Benefits of preconception counselling

Preconception counselling helps to:

  • Review medical, family and partner history
  • Assess potential pregnancy risks
  • Review current medications and treatment plans
  • Discuss management of long-term conditions in pregnancy
  • Provide lifestyle advice (including diet, alcohol and smoking)
  • Explore assisted conception or alternative family-building options where relevant

Early planning supports safer prescribing decisions and clearer care pathways during pregnancy.

Self-referral pathway

Patients can self-refer to the specialist Preconception Team, by completing the following steps:

  1. Download and fully complete the Preconception Advice Referral Form.
  2. Email the completed form to mse.preconception@nhs.net.
